New PixiPak - wrist wallet

Bonjour,
Are you looking for a thin wrist band, wrist wallet or ankle wallet to carry the minimum when going grocery shopping or talking walks? Take a look at our newly improved PixiPak. Not only do they now come in seven different colors but they include a front padding to protect your essentials from water and shocks.

These bags are much thinner and a little smaller than our classic MeliPak. The idea came when customers were telling me that sometimes, they would only need a small bag to carry their ipod nano, a few cards and a key. The MeliPak is great to carry your cell/PDA/iPod or camera but it is not always needed.

I also got comments from people about having their kids wear them when going to their friends house or at summer camp. Some customers also use it for their permanent insulin pump!

Back from One of a Kind Show

Hi, It was our fifth time at the Toronto One of a Kind Show which is our favorite consumer Show of all!! Again, I had a very successful and enjoyable time meeting my loyal customers and new ones. My Mom was there to help me - thank God! We had so many people visiting our booth I don't know what I would have done without her...

Surprisingly many people had never seen my booth and bags before even though I've been to the OOAK many times... This time my kiosk was further in the front and at the beginning of the rows (F15) vs the last time (O43) which is at the complete opposite side. Maybe the Show is just so big that it is hard to see it all ;-)

Here some picture of my set-up

This time, not only did I showcase my big images, I also added my large logo including the five different ways to wear your bag. Basically, all Jupiter Freedom bags can be used as arm wallets, leg pouches, wrist wallets, waist bands or ankle cases.

As the Show, I've also tested a new hands-free bag to my collection: the PassPak. This stylish and versatile bag is used to store your passport under or over your clothes when traveling. If you don't want to use it for your passport, you can use it as a little pouch when walking around town. As long as you are hands-free! This new addition was a great success and will shortly be sold on my website www.jupiterfreedom.com

The good, the fun and the ugly!

This is the time of the year for me that everything happens at the same time...

The GOOD: I've just finished updating my website with new hands-free bags. Since it is Jupiter Freedom's 3rd year anniversary, I've decided to treat my customers with a once-a-year sale. You will find new spring styles, my new PixiPak(tm) collection, new bag accessories and new ways to wear your bag. Since the elastic strap is adjustable and removable, use it like a wrist wallet, arm pocket, travel waist pouch, leg bag or ankle wallet! So versatile!

The FUN: I get to plan my Summer and Winter collections. I go through a ton of fabric by visiting multiple fabric stores in Montreal, New York and Baltimore. It could be intimidating seeing hundreds and hundreds of fabric rolls but I now know what to look for so my eyes browse pretty quickly. When something stands out I then look at the material quality and pattern. It is important to have a small pattern that would fit within the bag's dimensions. I have lots of new ideas for the next months so keep posted...

The UGLY: I hate doing it but I really have no choice... accounting... I'm not bad with numbers but it takes such a long time to enter all the receipts and balance everything out. Plus, since I do business in both Canada and the US, I have different currencies and taxes... Anyway, no sense complaining because it is inevitable ;-)

One more Show

Hi,
Just finished the Toronto and Chicago One of a Kind Show yesterday. Unfortunately, these two Shows run simultaneously so I had to go to Chicago on Dec 2 to set up my booth while Randee and Joanne were taking care of my customers in Toronto. We sold so many bags that most of the styles on my website are now sold out. If you would like to purchase a hands-free bag, please select one of the styles below. I will update my website tomorrow with all the new products.
Being on the road is hard work and long hours but as I always say it is always nice to meet face to face with my customers. Over the years, I've received great positive feedback and suggestions. Some of you asked me to make a little stylish pouch to carry your passport. I will do so in the next few months ;-)

The last new addition is the waist scarf. Again, a few of my customers were requesting to wear their bag around their waist. Although it was always possible by removing the elastic and looping a small belt, I wanted to offer another stylish alternative. Three colors will be offered: silver, cherry red and black.

At Ottawa Signature Show

Sorry about not writing sooner... Christmas is my busiest time of the year. I'm preparing lots of new bag styles and introducing my new mini-mini bag (which I still haven't found a name for it!!).

Currently, I am at Ottawa Signatures Christmas Show. Yesterday was the first day of the Show and it was outstanding. I had two nice ladies that passed by telling me that they bought respectively three and two bags last year. They were telling me how useful the armbags are. Honestly, this is why I love doing these consumers Shows so much.... I get direct access to my customers and hear what they have to say about my little arm wallet. It is very precious. Selling to a store is great for product distribution but you don't have this direct communication with the people that are buying your armbags.

Next stop is the One of a Kind Show Toronto, then Chicago and New York. It will be my first time in Chicago and New York and I CAN'T WAIT ;-)))

I'll update my Jupiter Freedom website with the new hands-free bag styles begining of November.

Hi, Every year around this time I like to do a survey with my customers to see how satisfied they are with our hands-free bags and hear their comments. I'm never nervous about it because I believe in the quality of our Jupiter Freedom bags but I definitely get excited about reading the feedback. I found out that...

More than 82% of our customers are "extremely" or "very satisfied" with their purchases ;-)
As I expected, most customers use their arm pockets for (in order): "traveling (city, beach, cruise, etc)", "doing sports (run, walk, bike, etc)", "when going out (bars, restaurants, clubs, etc)", "doing activities with kids", "walking the dog".

Many customers requested to buy an extra change purse and elastic strap online. We will update our website so you can do so.

In addition to our new mini bags (below), you will soon be able to purchase a silky belt to loop in your hands-free bag so you can wear it around your waist. Keep an eye on our new product launch in October!

New "Mini mini bag" for mp3 players

Bonjour, I'm very happy to show you a prototype of my new Jupiter Freedom "mini-mini bag"!! I had many comments over the years about developping a bag just for mp3 players, for kids and something to wear at the wrist or ankle or to hide under a shirt, skirt or pants.

I've put much thoughts into this and I came up with the perfect little size bag to address these needs. It is much thinner and a little smaller than the one I currently have in my collection. (see pictures) and it holds the minimum.

Here are the differences:

Mini-mini can store: keys, lipstick, money, cards, small mp3 player

Armbag can store: keys, lipstick, money, cards, any mp3 player (including iPod)/camera/cell phone (including iPhone, any PDAs). This bag also includes a removable change purse.

Bonjour, What an awsome weekend at Baltimore's Artscape. It was my first Show in the US. Since this Show was in the same city as just moved in, it made sense for me to do it. I met lots of interesting people and sold lots of armbags ;-)

Again, I received many positive comments:
"This is the updated version of the fanny pack"
"What a clever idea!"
"I just lost my iPhone. I could have used this."
"I'm tired of bulky iPod armbands. Like this stylish Jupiter Freedom armband."

We sold many bags to men so I NEED to come up with a masculine line. Men just love the idea of carrying their Blackberry around their arm when doing sports instead of their pockets or on a clip belt. I will make one for my November Shows...

On the Road

Hi,
As some of you heard, I moved to Baltimore a few months ago but still produce my hands-free bags in Quebec. It requires more effort on the logistic side (especially customs...) but it helps in developping the US market. I'm will be doing a few Craft Shows in Baltimore, Chicago and New York and have a few stores holding my bags. I have to visit Montreal every three months to go get more supplies for the next production but it a trip where I can mix work and pleasure by seeing friends.

Today for instance, I'm going to see a new production facility next to Victoriaville to see if they can make my bags. I need to have higher volume as I will sell more and more bags in stores as of 2010. I would also want to sell my hands-free bags in Las Vegas' hotels. I think they would be great for visitors as they could safely wear the armbag to shows, when walking the Strip, shopping and keeping their chips handy, etc. The World is big and lots of opportunities. So I want to make sure I can deliver ;-)

I can definitely tell Spring is here! Customers always get excited about wearing their Jupiter Freedom hands-free bags when doing spring and summer activities. I always have an increase in orders in May up until August and it gets me very excited and motivated... Then we switch gears and we put ourselves in x-mas mode.

Toronto One a a Kind Show

Hi, I just finished a great Show in Toronto. Lots of people passed by and that was one of my best Show. I was very lucky to have a well positionned corner booth. I did long hours (11 to 12 hour-day) but it is always a pleasure to meet my customers and talk about my Jupiter Freedom armbags. Most people are very curious about how I came up with the idea, how I design them, etc. I also always get great suggestions...

This year I had a few requests for blue and green designs (most of my styles right now are red, pink, yellow) and for small size armbags. One thing that amazed me is the amount of teenagers (12-17 years old) interested in my bags. Although, I didn't design the bags with this clientele in mind, it makes perfect sense! They're too young to want to carry a purse but independent enough to have to carry a cell phone, id, money and keys. My other strong clientele is the 30-55 active women (runners, travellers, moms, with dogs, etc). They just love the convenience of my armbags + they are fashonable. What more can you ask?

I'm leaving next week for the Ottawa Spring Craft Sale from April 16-19. This is always a fun show! I'll keep you posted on how it went.

Amazing but true...

I am so happy right now... My friend sent me a text message yesterday telling me he just saw a lady walking by wearing a Jupiter Freedom armbag. The amazing part is that he is down in Florida!!! He is selling jewelry at a fair and saw this women passing by his booth so he asked her if it was a Jupiter Freedom armbag. Apparently she was as surprised as he was. She bought the bag in Toronto last year... MY armbag in Florida!! Wow I'm just stunned... It's a nice feeling...

Going to One of a Kind Show

Bonjour,

I'm getting ready for the Toronto One of a Kind Show... To me, this is one of the most exciting time of the year. That means:

- Re-doing my booth design

- Making new Spring collection

- Coordinate bookings for car, hotel, electricity, passes, etc

- Promoting my presence to the Show to journalists and customers

- Prep work for product packaging (receipt, stickers, product cards, business cards, etc)

- Hoping for the best ;-)

For my booth design, I wanted to create a very strealime look and feel. To make my product stand out, the booth will all be white with some green here and there. To convey the "freedom" attribute of the product, I will suspend everything from the ceiling. Here is a sketch of what it will look like.

For my new Spring collection, I will have the cutest armbag! Here is a sneak peak at what I will have at the Spring One of a Kind Show.

This week I've been working like crazy on updating my website with new Jupiter Freedom armbags styles for Spring. Before I can do that, I needed to take pictures of all my products. I used to have a Montreal professional photographer do the photo shoot, but since I've moved, I need to do it myself for now. I think my pictures turned out good after all ;-) Her is a glimpse at the session... (see pictures below)

Since I'm a few seasons ahead, I shopped for great summer fabric in New York a few weeks ago. I'm so excited about their texture, pattern and vibrant colors. We are currently in production so they will be ready for the Toronto One of a Kind Show and for the Ottawa Originals Craft Sale in April.

Let me know what you think...

January is the time to close the books, count inventory and plan the new year (which should actually be done the previous year but anyway...).

I thought alot about my sales strategy for 2009 and I've decided to focus my energy on Consumer Shows in Canada and US instead of selling through stores. Don't get me wrong... if a store is interested by my armbags I will be glad to sell my products to them. The issue right now is that by doing my product locally, production costs are high and because stores often request a 50-60% margin, it would be hard to survive - even with an increase in volume. By doing Shows, not only I keep the margin, but I develop a relationship with the end customers (who come back to the same Shows), I hear their needs and comments, I can tests products, etc. The costs associated with these Shows could be high but the revenues usually come accordingly.

I feel I could focus on a few markets (Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa and Chicago, NY, Baltimore) in 2009 and then sell in stores in 2010 when my volume is high enough that I can get better production costs.

Any other ideas or suggestions?

Curtains are closed on the Toronto One of a Kind Show.

What an adventure! It was the second time for Jupiter Freedom to attend this event and I am so touched by the feedback I got.

First of all, I had many returning customers from last March passing by my booth, buying more armbags for gifts or telling me how convenient it is and how they use it all the time when travelling, walking the dog, taking walks and more. Seeing them again and hearing their comments gave me a sense of accomplishment. I know I have a great product but when you hear it from your customers, it is very special. I even had three customers, who specifically came at the Show just to get my armbags!

Again, I was very touched by the reaction of people towards the idea of wearing a bag on your arm or leg to carry accessories. People say the same thing over and over again: clever!

It is very motivating to hear such comment and it encourages me to do more.

I'm now moving along to Ottawa for another Show at Landsdown Park from Dec 16-21. It is my first time in Ottawa so I can't wait to see the reaction.

Today was the first day at the Toronto One of a Kind and it was outstanding!!
I'm selling my new armbag collection and so far, alot of people like the Secret Ocean and Secret Orient bags. (I will put a picture soon).

I'm in a section reserved for new artisans (G-56) and I am fortunate to have a great location - right by two aisles and the restaurant area. I always love going to Shows like these because I get to meet my customers and see which styles they prefer, for which activity, for who they want to buy it for, etc. Now that I've done several shows, I have people stopping by my booth and telling me they saw my product at the Clothing Show, at the Lac Memphrémagog, etc. Very interesting to see that people remember my products ;-)

Santa is getting ready

Hi, Alot is happening behind the scene right now...

I'm getting ready to feature my new Jupiter Freedom armbag collection at the Toronto One of a Kind Show from Nov 27-Dec7 (Booth G-56) and at the Original's Ottawa Christmas Craft Sale in Ottawa from Dec 16-21 (Booth 302). Pass by and see me! I will have 6 new styles ranging from chic evening to sportswear. If you haven't been to the One of a Kind Show, you must go. Not just to see my arm bags (!!) but to see all the other artisans and original gift ideas. This is THE show to go if you are looking for unique presents for the Holidays.

My production is running smoothly and the bags are absolutely gorgeous! I'm now making little jewelry charms to attach on your armbag to jazz it up when going out. After conducting a satisfaction survey a few weeks ago, I heard from customers that it was a little hard to get to the pocket inside the bag. That said, you will be glad to know that I've removed the pocket and redesigned the card holder instead to also carry coins and keys. This new card/coin holder is removable and matches the armbag. I will upload picture very soon.

It happened...

It finally happened... I heard my song on the radio...
Actually, it wasn't a song nor a radio but a customer wearing my armbag in a random public place. Here I was, waiting to pay at the grocery store when I saw a lady proudly wearing a Jupiter Freedom Mystery Blossom bag on her arm. It made me so happy! I asked her if she was satisfied by the product and she was so enthousiatic that another lady waiting in line behind her started to be interested by the idea. She eventually bought three armbags!

Can't wait to see more armbags on people!

Hi again,
Long time no talk... but all is well with me.
This month, I was again very happy to see a Jupiter Freedom armbag in this month's Châtelaine (french) and Quebec Scope magazines! It really makes me proud to see this exposure. I feel like a singer that hears her song on the radio for the first time.

On another note (!!), after searching like a mad women for an additional production facility in Quebec to make more Jupiter Freedom armbags, I'm finally on the right path... I have found about 10 places interested in doing my product. I'm expecting my business to really bloom in the next few months and I need to be able to produce in a higher capacity.

Great news! Jupiter Freedom will soon sell "PiNKiTUDE" armbags. "Inspired by MGM's iconic Pink Panther, PiNKiTUDE brand initiative is targeting teen and young adult women and is devised to raise awareness as to the importance of breast self-examination, early detection and treatment of breast cancer while also stressing the importance of a healthy lifestyle." I'm very happy to support this initiative linked to the Susan G Komen foundation. I'll keep you posted ;-)

I can't believe its been a year that I left my job to start this business... already... I'm still learning alot and loving it!

I just had to write about my outstanding week. It is funny sometimes when good news come in bundles! Since Monday it is non stop good news and I'm just overwhelmed by it!

Day 1: I launch my armbags at a new Toronto Gallery Boutique called ShopGirls. It is a nice creative retail and studio space in ParkdaleVillage featuring amazing up-and-coming Canadian artists & designers. See www.shopgirls.ca

I also schedule a meeting in a few weeks with another major retailer in Quebec.

Plus, I'm launching the Jupiter Freedom armbags on Aeroplan.com. Soon you will now be able to purchase an armbag with your Aeroplan Miles. How great is that!

Day 2: I had the privilege to meet this women with a great energy that is the owner of LilyEcolo (www.lilyecolo.com). She makes quality and trendy eco bags to replace any plastic bags when shopping, pic-nic, travelling, etc. We love our respective products and there are many ways we could work together. I'm really looking forward to it.

What do you think of the idea of designing a matching kit where:
- a Jupiter Freedom armbag would be sold with a matching folded re-usable grocery bag inside for the Shopper in you
- a Jupiter Freedom armbag would be sold inside a matching big trendy beach bag for the Vacation girl in you
- a Jupiter Freedom armbag would be sold inside a matching light-weight backpack for the Sport girl in you

Day 3: I'm finalizing a deal with a major player in the US (California) to sell my armbags while benefiting a great cause. I'm very excited about this opportunity and I'll tell you more about it shortly...

Day 4: Got a call from the One of a Kind Show. I'm in for the x-mas Show! I got so many positive feddback from customers this Spring, I'm very happy to participate again.

Plus, I'll also be selling my Jupiter Freedom bags at the Traversée du Lac Memphrémagog this summer.

Day 5: I got a call from a stylist to be featured in a well known fashion magazine this summer.

I think I'm good for a drink after a week like this ;-)

Back from Montreal's Women Show

Another great time at another Exhibit...
Two weekends ago was the Montreal Women's Show where I sold my armbags again. Setting-up the booth, I had to re-organize by kiosk display and be creative since it was larger than expected (pics to come). It worked out fine and women liked having the full collection in front of them.

Again, this was a great experience as I had a chance to get customers feedback which was very positive (I'm sure having a sex toys display and girls dressed with funky wigs next to my booth probably helped!!). It is funny to notice that women in Montreal and Toronto like different armbags styles. Most women in Mtl liked the Midnight Garden one when TO was going for the Midnight Shadow one. Interesting to see the trends...

As for my day-to-day activities, I'm mostly focused on sales and am trying to lower my production costs which has always been the challenge. The fashion industry (on the production side) is very slow and difficult now and alot of suppliers closed their doors a few years ago because of a lack of work and you have to really dig to find someone that can help you. It's like a treasure hunt!

I'm currently looking for other Shows and Exhibit to attend so if you know any in your area, please let me know.

Just came back from the outstanding One of a Kind Show in Toronto where I spent 5 days talking to people about my armbags and hearing their feedback. WOW, what I response I got! Friday was totally insane. I was litterally selling an armbag every 7 minutes! I knew I had a great product because I think it is so practical, fashionable and versatile but when you hear other people talk about it and loving it so much, it pumps up my motivation.

Here are the true comments people would make:

- This is soooo smart and handy

- Where were you when I lost my wallet?

- Where were you when I went on vacation?

- This bag is so versatile

- Love the idea that you can also wear it on the leg

- What a GREAT idea

- I need this when I go to the gym

- This is perfect to go out dancing

- Great for dogwalkers like my friend

- This is sooo clever!

- I've been looking for something like this for years.

People were so enthousiatic about the armbags. They liked the different styles and the fact that you can wear it on your upper arm, lower arm or the thigh. I sold most of my armbags to women 25 to 45 years old but I was pleasantly surprise by the interest of young kids (6-14) and more mature women (60 and up). I will always remember this 12 years old girl that was totally in love with my armbags. She had the greatest smile when her mom bought her the Midnight City armbag. She passed by my booth the next day just to show me how good she looked wearing it. I wish I had takent a picture of her...

I also had a few good suggestions. Here are the most popular ones

- Have a bag big enough for the passport

- Insert a folded re-usable shopping bag inside the armbag

- Make an armbag for medication

Hi,
I've been wanted to write for a long time but just didn't find the time...
Right now I'm focusing on three things:

1- Sales, sales, sales
After many months of developing a great product, it is time to really put it out there. With the coverage in Clin d'Oeil magazine, I got alot of product awareness and sales. I'm also looking forward to close a deal with a major player in the USA raising funds for Breast Cancer by selling my armbags in different stores. I'm always looking for partnership opportunities to distribute my products. And with the 15-week-class I'm taking on "Sales Technique" (which I really need), I'll become the best saleswomen on the planet. Watch out Tupperware!!!

2- PR
I believe I have a very innovating product that is both practical and fashionable. I hope journalists will appreciate that and will talk about it. It is hot, hot, hot! I'm looking into fashion, sports and travel magazine. Any other ideas?

3- One of a Kind Show
This is THE fun show to be in Toronto in March. There are thousands of people visiting this 5-day event. Right now, I'm trying to put together a little stylish booth design. I have a few ideas which I'll share with you in a few days. All my armbags will be on sale there + I'll bring 3 new spring styles. If you are in the Toronto area, pass by ;-)

Oh yes, I also go a $3,000 grant from a Quebec programm called "Jeunes Promoteurs" which helps out entrepreneurs. I am very happy about this!

Wow! I'm super happy and proud to see my first product coverage in a magazine. You can find a picture of the Midnight Garden (very popular) and Midnight Stars in the February issue of Clin d'Oeil which is a very popular french canadian magazine. I knew it was coming but when you actually see it, it is a great feeling! When my mom saw it at the grocery store, she almost screamed to everybody that it was her daughter's armbags.... Good thing I wasn't with her...

"Made in China" What do yout think?

Sorry I didn't write earlier... I've been wrapping my head around a few things lately...

Last week I went to the One of a Kind show in Toronto because next March, I've been accepted to sell my armbags and wanted to see the set up and have a feel for the event. It's an exhibit that features original and fun gifts from artists and artisans. There are so many people visiting this exhibit it is insane.... Right now, I definitely have to build up my inventory for the show.

On another note, I was contacted by two big fashion magazines in Canada to promote my armbags in a few months. I'm very happy about that since it will help me alot to get the word out there. In a few days, I will also be selling my products on a US site called www.shoporangebutton.com.

On the production side, the bags are of great quality and I am very please and proud to produce them locally. In addition to provide work to people from my country, it gives me much more flexibility and control to make sure the products are made up to my standards. Right now, these two key points are very important.

Like I mention on my website (and my friends can confirm), I aboslutely love Asia but do not want to produce my bags over there at this time. First, I don't have the volume and second, I cannot see in which conditions the workers are doing their job. Exploitation happens everywhere but the high demand in these asian countries increases the pressure to deliver quickly and at the cheapest price and therefore has a negative impact on workers. I think it is inevitable at one point to make a product like mine in China or India due to volume (look at Matt&Nat bags), but when the day comes, I will make sure to do business with manufacturers that have a good reputation and offer good working conditions.

Of courses, making my products locally increases the costs and therefore price but it is everybody's reponsibility to educate consumers about the impact of always looking for the cheapest price. I think more people are sensitive about this issue and are willing to pay a little more to support responsible products.

I'm selling alot of bags and the Midnight Garden seems to be the most popular. I think people like the little silver flowers which makes it really feminine.

Honestly, my armbag makes the perfect Holiday gifts for urban, active and social 20-35 years old women. Think about your sister, cousin, best friend, collegue ;-)

Wow I can't believe this is happening... what an adventure... Of course, this is just the beginning but I feel that I just hit an important milestone to actually put my product on the market.

A week in Jupiter Freedom...

Monday: Take my emails and respond to my first potential client that I don't know- yeah! Write on my blog. Look at magazines for inspiration on fabrics. Work the rest of the day to try to figure out how I will attach the jewlery accessories to the armbag. Go to the beads place to get a crash course. Start doing jewelry accessories myself. Not simple and very labor intensive...

Tuesday: Take my emails. Go to Supreme Laces to get my elastics, YKK for the zippers, MSB for the piping, Ultratex for bra hooks, Pacific Imports for other hooks, Eugene textile, Club tissu and Fabricville to get some fabric and inspiration. Breathe and eat. Go to my paternist. Prepare all technical specs sheets and raw material inventory.

Wednesday: Go to St-Jérôme to drop raw materials and provide direction to the production team who will make the bags. Back to Montreal - stuck in traffic...Take my emails. Spend time on Facebook. Do my accounting (ouach). Look into all my purses to find receipts. Realize that I spent alot of money. Adjust my sales, production and inventory projections. Re-balance my cashflow sheet.

Thursday: Take my emails. Validate 15 images sent out by my designer. Validate the web pages in development. Write web content in english and french. Prepare product inventory sheets, product codes and names. Create invoice templates for customers. Go on PayPal to figure out the handshake process. Look at Canada Post, UPS and Fedex to figure out costs and customs formalities for shipping into US and International. Buy shipping boxes that are big enough to fit 1-2 armbags but small enough so we fit into the "small package" category from Canada Post so it is cheaper.

Friday: Take a class on something like "Income taxe for businesses", "GST", "Exportations/C-TPAT", "Accounting". Eat. Prepare marketing plan and tactics for launch. Find websites to advertise and distribute my product. Fill in applications for contests, grants and exhibits (BTW - I will be at the One of a Kind show in Toronto in March - yeah). Improve my business plan. Breathe...

Having fun...

I'm really excited... today is my first day of production. I drove all the way to St-Jérôme this morning (1h drive) to give all my 5000 yards of fabrics (!!) so the production place can start doing the bags. It was a hectic week running around getting all the material but I'm really having fun doing it. I know it is business but people are really nice and helpful. I'm not afraid to ask around for the best suppliers for zippers, elastics, fabric and people are always pointing in a direction. I love talking with people that have been in the business for years. They are really passionate about it even if the garment industry is a pretty though one especially since everything is now made in China or India.

I also love looking around for the best deal in order to reduce my costs. It feels like a scavenger hunt to me. Every time I find a cheaper supplier I feel like getting a reward. I know this will translate into a better deal for my customers and more business for me ;-)

Leaving my job to start my own business was the best thing for me at this point in my life. Not only it was the perfect timing but I feel that with my education and work experiences, I have the maturity, the skills and competencies to make this happen. Most of all, I'm having fun doing it. To me, a job should not necessarily be a big party but should definitely be stimulating. This one certainly is...

Hi again, I got so many emails and comments about my armbags, thank you very much for your feedback and support ;-) Alot of you were asking more details about the products so here it is...
3 words to describe the Jupiter Freedom products: versatility, exclusivity and responsability.

Versatility:
The armbag is a stylish pouch that fits your cell, keys, cards/money, lipstick. Like the name suggests, you wear on your arm when doing hands-free activities like going to the beach (think vacations!!!). When you buy the Jupiter Freedom armbag, you also get a matching card holder, a water resistant ipod nano pouch to attach on the front of the bag and a silky matching travel bag to carry it when not in use. Also, you can purchase a jewelry accessory that you can attach to the bag to jazz it up when going out. This allow a mix and match of styles and colors.

Exclusivity:
All armbags are made in a limited edition of 100 per model. No mass production here... I hate when I buy a bag and I see people walking around with the same one... When you get your bag, you will see which of the 100 you got.

Responsability:
The Jupiter Freedom armbags are NOT made in China. As most of you know, I absolutely love Asia but will keep it for my travelling... In fact, they are made in Quebec by a socially responsible organisation that provides support and training in industrial sewing to people in need. No sweatshop here! Basically, by buying my products you support your community and local economy.
Also, our products will never be made of animal textile such as leather, fur or suede (Marc, you'll be happy!!)

As for the price, it will be $60 (tax incl.) for the armbag, card holder, ipod case and travel pouch. Not bad when it costs $39 to by just a cheap ipod armband at Best Buy... Plus it make you feel good to support an ethically responsible product ;-)

10 days to production...

Hola, thanks for your feedback on my last post. It is hard to realize that I'm going into production in 10 days after 8 months of back and forth for the prototypes! It is alot of ups and downs but I didn't find too hard to make it happen (I might have just jinxed it!). There is alot to do but you need to keep your eyes on the ball (thanks to Tarik's advice), prioritize and be creative with solutions when problems or unexpected outcomes occur. One thing that I keep reminding myself is to have fun doing it.

I'm excited to show you my first collection of 4 different armbags which will be all in black tone - midnight city, midnight stars, midnight garden and midnight breeze (click on the picture to see more details). All armbags will be done in a limited edition (max. 100) so if you like one I suggest you get it as soon as it comes out end of October. Obviously, this is a fall/winter collection and colors will be brighter in spring/summer. Again, your feedback is appreciated (don't be afraid to tell me what you don't like - I won't take it personnal ;-))

The only thing I find unfortunate is that I will launch a "summer" product in November... The positive side of it is that I will have time to run the logistic before my peak time. Also, Christmas is around the corner so it would be a great gift for someone who goes to the gym, like to dance in clubs (Denise??), have a dog to walk (who walks a dog with a purse...), have kids to carry/play with or for someone that is just always on the go... Not the best time to launch this product but not the worse either.

Still motivated

Hi, After the few downs of last week, things are getting better. We did a new bag this week and it looks great. What do you think? We've made a few changes on the products design and the bag is much stronger.
I've also decided that my first collection's theme (for fall/winter 2007) will be "Black & White". The border around the bag will be black (as in picture) and the front of the bag will be in a black and white shade. I really like the b&w tweed with a touch of purple and brown on this picture. I will attached more pics of the other design when chosen.

As for my motivation, it is even stronger... I really beleive in this product and everything that is happening is just such a great learning experience. I sounds a little cheesy but it is true. By having my own business, I learn so much about legal, accounting (which I hate), financing, government bureaucracy, fashion and retail industries, production, logistics, customer service, etc. It is all about connecting the dots and I love it.

Bad news and good news...

Alright, the bad news first...
I got my mini-production bags and I freaked out about the costs but most importantly I'm disapointed with the quality. I say most importantly because to me the costs can always be negociated and find a way that both parties are happy but quality is non-negociable. They are not horrible but not good enough for me and for my future customers. As for the costs, I need them to cut it by half !! So right now, I'm back to square two (not one since I don't have to redo everything ;-)) I'm basically looking for seamstresses with experience that could assemble my bags at home. Know anybody?

The good news...
I finally got an answer from the employment insurance (after 9 weeks!) and the nice lady told me they will give me a weekly allowance for 23 weeks. My cat will finally be able to eat...
So now I can go wait in line to get another grant from the provincial that might give me another one from another instance... Vive Asterix et Obelix!!

Hopefully I'll find a solution for my bag production soon...

Hoping for the best

Alright, last week was a slower week because I was waiting for my mini-production of 20 bags to get done so I can get a pricing. While waiting, I looked around Montreal to find better prices for some of my material and I am pretty happy that I was successful by meeting some great local people.

Today I'm going to St-Jerome where my mini-production was done to talk about production costs. They had to time every steps of the bag making to provide the best estimate. I'm looking forward to see my first 20 bags. It is now real and I'm hoping for the best...

Everything else was kind of on hold because I want to be sure to have a product before moving forward. I think alot of people starting their businesses spend money on non-essential things when the most important element is having a product. You can have the best marketing and website but if you don't have anything to sell, your not going anywhere...

Hard time...

Yesterday was a hard day...
I had to run around getting my raw materials everywhere so we can do 20 bags to test the production time, costs and quality. Although it wasn't easy, that wasn't so hard.

The hard part is the time I'm waisting waiting to go into production. We keep doing one prototype at a time every week because the production place can't go quicker. I wish we would have spent 2 weeks every day and bang! the bag would have been ready to go... It is frustating but I really like the people there. They are really helpfull and generous. I really want to work with them but I'm hoping the costs of production won't be too high... It is important for me to produce my product here in Canada but the price needs to be low enough for all my customers.

So now I have to wait until end of next week to have news about the costs...
Until then, I try to stay focus and not spend too much money...

Another prototype done

Seem like getting armbag prototypes done is the story of my life... It is exciting however to produce something and show it to friend that reacts positively not because they are your friends but because they really like your product.
I was very dispointed this week to learn from one of my supplier that one the fabric that I use is out of order... It looked so good... I will try to find a similar one but it will not be the same ;-(
I also realized that I prefer the armbags with prints on it then the plain color one. I will still make a black one just because black is pretty universal but I'll go crazy with the other ones...

As for my website, we have started the work. I'm looking forward to have a prototype for this to. I will have cool Flash application to add some pizzazz to the site.

Moving along...

This week has been a great week. We did a new bag with a fun design and it looks really good. I'm very pleased with the results. I can't wait to see how it will sell compare to the other bag designs.
I also got my business cards ready and they look great. I can finally start my marketing ;-)
I still don't know if I will get unemployment insurance yet but I hope so. I'm also meeting with some people from SAJE Montreal monday to get some money to help start the business. This is one thing good about paying income taxe!

I fell I'm a bit all over the place... I'm bouncing back and forth with the paternist and the seamstress for my bag; I need to finish my website storyboard if I want to start developing it; I have to follow-up with UI to get some money; yet I still haven't finalyze my marketing plan and tactics and I haven't bought my camera to do the "Making of Jupiter Freedom" videos fro my blog. It's alot but very exciting...
I need more unused curtains please...

Prototypes

It has been two weeks that I left my job and I feel really good about my decision. Yesterday I came back from St-Jérôme where I make my prototypes and was very pleased with where we stand. Now I can really feel I'm getting closer to a final product. The people that work there are great. Claire is the main seamstress that I work with and althought we work hard we are having fun doing it.
I also had to run around town to meet with possible suppliers for zippers and other bag components. I totally new for me but I'm lerning alot.

This blog is about the making of my new business: "Jupiter Freedom"
I thought it would be pretty interesting to relate the ups and downs of starting a business. We all have a good idea that we want to put on the market but not all of us "have the guts to make the jump" (as my friends say). I did! and will let you into my world.
